Ten years ago, LVP was a budget compromise. Today, premium LVP is a deliberate choice — and often the right one for the room. The visuals rival real wood. The wear layers handle anything family life throws at them. The waterproof construction works in basements, kitchens, mudrooms, and laundry rooms where hardwood doesn't belong.
LVP, SPC, WPC, AND LAMINATE — WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE?
These four products often get lumped together, but they're built differently and perform differently.
LVP — Luxury Vinyl Plank is the flexible, fully waterproof category. It's comfortable underfoot, looks remarkably like real wood, and works almost anywhere in the home.
SPC — Stone Plastic Composite is rigid-core LVP with a stone-mineral construction. It's harder, more dimensionally stable, and forgiving over uneven subfloors.
WPC — Wood Plastic Composite uses a softer wood-plastic core that's quieter and warmer underfoot. Same waterproof performance as LVP and SPC, but a more comfortable feel.
Laminate uses a high-density fiberboard core with a printed photographic top layer. The visuals are gorgeous, the price is friendly — but laminate isn't waterproof. Great for living rooms and bedrooms but not for basements or wet areas.

LVP isn't right for every room — but it's right for more rooms than most homeowners realize. Basements where moisture is always a concern. Kitchens where dishwashers and ice makers leak. Frequently Asked Questions
Is LVP really waterproof?
Yes — true LVP, SPC, and WPC products are 100% waterproof on the surface. Standing water won't damage the flooring itself. Laminate is not waterproof and shouldn't be installed in wet areas.
How long does LVP flooring last?
Premium LVP typically lasts 20-30 years with proper care, depending on the wear layer thickness and quality. Higher-end products with thicker wear layers (20+ mil) can outlast that range.
Can LVP be installed over existing flooring?
Sometimes — depends on what's underneath. LVP can often go over existing tile, hardwood, or vinyl as long as the surface is flat, clean, and structurally sound. It can't go over carpet.
Does LVP look like real hardwood?
Premium LVP looks remarkably close to real hardwood — most people can't tell the difference without touching it. Higher-end products feature embossed-in-register textures that match the visual graining.
LVP vs. laminate — which is better?
LVP is fully waterproof and more flexible; laminate is more rigid with HDF core and beautiful visuals but isn't waterproof. LVP works almost anywhere; laminate is best for living areas and bedrooms only.
Can LVP be installed in basements?
Yes — and basements are one of the best places for LVP. The waterproof construction handles any moisture concerns, and the flexible nature of LVP works well over concrete subfloors.
